McAllen Information

McAllen is the largest city in Hidalgo County, Texas, in an area known as the Rio Grande Valley. McAllen is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Prior to ratification of the North American Free Trade Agreement, economic activity in McAllen was centered on agriculture and petroleum, however now the city benefits from The Foreign Trade Zone, which is located on the southwest side of the city. For the past several years, Mcallen's economy has been improving and has become one of the best improving economies in the United States.

In addition to the industrial activity, there is a vibrant retail sector that is dependent on purchases made by wealthier middle and upper middle-class consumers. This sector benefits greatly from the express highway links, on the Mexican side of the border, to Monterrey, Victoria and Tampico.

McAllen is home to The University of Texas–Pan American, part of The University of Texas System. It serves the Rio Grande Valley and southern Texas with baccalaureate, masters-level, and doctoral degrees. It is also home to South Texas College a public community college in the Rio South Texas Region.
Retail and tourism are major sources of revenue in McAllen. Two of the largest employers are the McAllen Foreign Trade Zone and Sharyland Business Park. The Rio Grande Valley is known for its fertile ranching lands, and McAllen's economy is heavily dependent on grapefruit, onions, aloe vera and sugar cane.
